My organic food experience started in 2010. My main reason to go organic was to lose weight. Alhamdulillah, I shed 10 kilos in 3 months, without reducing my food intake. I love to eat. So, when I decided to lose some weight to be leaner (I wasn't fat, sorry to disappoint), I needed to find a way to burn fat without starving. And going organic is part of the answer! The other part was avoiding sugar.
Anyway, this blog isn't about losing weight. Mainly, it's about my organic food experience in Malaysia. However, it's very tempting to write about losing weight and relating it to food, so bear with me if I get sidetracked from time to time. Losing weight is an interesting topic, especially if you get to eat and burn fat at the same time!
Ok, so the first thing that comes to mind now about organic food in Malaysia - I still can't find halal grass-fed beef! I did find halal organic beef at Village Grocer Bangsar (Obe Organics) and Jusco (can't remember which outlet), but I'm picky. If the imported beef does not have a halal cert/logo from halal certification bodies endorsed by JAKIM, I would not buy it, even if it has a halal logo. I'm NOT saying it's not halal - it's just a personal matter of trusting the halal logo. So, as a muslim, when in doubt, better leave it altogether. If you're confident with the halal status, just go right ahead.
Grass-fed beef comes from cows that are fed with grass (i.e. pasture-raised) whereas organic beef might originate from cows that are fed with organic grains. If you ask me, anything natural is better so cows eating grass is way more natural than cows eating grains, even organic grains. I'll write an update when and IF I can find a good source of halal grass-fed beef (that I can trust).
Organic eggs are easy to find, depending on where you live. If you live in Klang Valley, no problem. Outside Klang Valley - tough! When I was living in Sungai Petani, Kedah last year, I have to drive all the way to JUSCO Queensbay, Penang to get my weekly supply of eggs, which is more than 50km away. I have no idea where to buy organic eggs in Kedah.
In Klang Valley, my favourite spot to buy organic eggs is Ecogreen Organic Shop @ TTDI. You can also buy organics eggs from Country Farm outlets.
